Being of royal blood, and the heir to the throne, Koehlon finds himself to be many things to many people. He is surrounded by those that want something from him, or depend on him in one way or another, almost at all times. He is lucky to call a handful of those people trusted, and friend, but at times he feels the weight of his obligations to his people pulling like a noose around his neck, tightening inch by inch until he feels he might suffocate.
Every now and again, he manages to escape, just for a short while to go on a walkabout within his Glade, alone, to sort his thoughts and get some perspective on the issues that are most troubling to him. His most troublesome thoughts today center chiefly around Nan. Try as he might, he just can't seem to escape the draw he feels towards her, and his all encompassing need to be her protector. These feelings are causing strife with his father, a complication he doesn't need. Laurion has always had issues with their father, but Koehlon is typically willing to be the dutiful son he was brought up to be and follow the path his father, and decades of tradition, have set before him. Nan is much like a dropped tree in the forest that makes the path in front of him much more difficult to pass through.
At times he feels the Glade, and his place within its borders, to be a beautiful prison that strangles a part of his spirit, and he wishes in these fleeting moments that he was just a normal man, in control of his own destiny.
